Zion - Mt Carmel Highway
This scenic road connecting Zion National Park to Mount Carmel passes through the long and narrow Zion Mt. Carmel tunnel, just as impressive today as it was in the 1920s.

The scenic route UT-9 (Scenic Byway 9 or Zion-Mount Carmel Highway) is a must-see when visiting Zion National Park. It crosses the southern part of the park from west to east for about 17 km and notably allows access to Zion Canyon National Park.

It is one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the United States. The landscapes are absolutely stunning, the colors and shapes of the mountains are very varied!

This area is generally only accessed by car, as parking and viewpoints are rare. Coming from Bryce, this road passes through a tunnel (Zion-Mount Carmel) carved through the mountain and then descends into Zion Canyon via large switchbacks.

I highly recommend that you stop just before taking the tunnel (when coming from Bryce Canyon) to go hike the Canyon Overlook Trail. This hike is really worth it as it offers a beautiful view of the park and its mountains. However, parking options are very limited (no more than a dozen spots!).
