Former residence of the Dukes of Anjou during the 14th and 15th centuries, the Château de Saumur was later transformed into a prison, used as an arsenal for weapons and ammunition, before now housing the municipal museum (since 1906). It is learned a little later upon entering the walls that it was restored based on an ancient miniature "The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry," which shows the castle as it was in the 15th century.

A few photos of the outside are necessary: the castle overlooking the Loire is very pretty. Although the exterior of the castle impressed us, we were however disappointed by the visit inside the walls. Unlike the other castles we visited in the Loire Valley, this one lacks history and the presentation of information on long panels can be discouraging. The rooms have not been furnished with period furniture but display the items from the museum.
