Murgia Materana Park

We took this walk at sunset. We only have one regret: not discovering this spot earlier in the day. It's there that you truly realize the size of the city.

At dusk, the slanting light of the sun caresses the walls of the old town as well as the spectacular landscape that faces it. A delight!

Matera has up to 150 rock churches! The exterior, bare and discreet, thus offers a striking contrast with the interior, often covered in murals.

A guided tour is essential to visit these churches because they are all closed.

This park covers more than 8,000 hectares and offers the opportunity to enjoy beautiful hikes with stunning views of Matera. It is home to many troglodyte dwellings as well as rock churches.

If you are short on time to visit this park (as we were), we recommend taking the paved walkway that runs alongside the park while touring Matera.

Matera hosts numerous rock-hewn churches, carved directly into the limestone.

I also advise you to get the pass that allows you to visit 3 monuments in the city. The pass costs €7 per person.
